Visual Arts 1

Course Description

Students in Art I learn the fundamentals of art.  They explore many different media, processes, use of tools and learn to apply new techniques to create original pieces.  Students define, manipulate, and understand how to use the Elements of Art and the Principles of Design to create successful compositions.  Students critique their work and the work of others in this class.  A sketchbook serves as an integral part of the class as a journal for life studies and idea development. Students also learn the global, historical, societal, and cultural contexts of the visual arts.  Fostering creative/ critical thinking skills on a personal level as well as collaboratively are a focus in developing the necessary tools needed as a practicing artist or within any profession where real-life challenges demand innovative and unique solutions.  “Thinking outside the box” is necessary for the success of our students as well as the well-being of everyone’s future.

Visual Arts 2

Course Description

Students in Art II build upon the fundamentals of Art I.  They continue to explore many different media, processes, use of tools and learn to apply new techniques to create original pieces.  Students will learn to recognize the use of global themes, symbols, and subject matter in art and be able to “deconstruct” a piece of artwork in order to understand its meaning.  Self-expression goes to a deeper level in Art II and students are able critique their work and the work of others in this class.  Students will be able to choose specific media in order to communicate or express an intended meaning.  A sketchbook serves an integral part of the class and serves as a journal for life studies and idea development. Students also learn the global, historical, societal, and cultural contexts of the visual arts.

Visual Arts 3 & 4

I

Course Description

Students expand their knowledge from previous classes by considering and selecting from a variety of media and techniques in order to create personal responses to a range of creative prompts.  They will use advanced concepts and methods through personal expression to create art.  Each project is identified with a design challenge and students find solutions through multiple compositional sketches and planning of ideas.  Upon completion of their sketches students create a final piece of work.  At the end of each project a class critique is used to evaluate and discuss each artist’s work.  Art History, technology and other disciplines will be incorporated as they apply to each project.  A heavy emphasis will also be placed on American art and contemporary art as part of the new Essential Standards.  Creative and innovative approaches to a variety of subject matter will also be emphasized.  Sketchbooks are an integral part of this class for documentation and experimentation of ideas and images.
